Festival Classique is always on the look-out for something extraordinary; forgotten or undiscovered The Hague locations and subjects. This year, we’ll visit the notorious Gevangenpoort, the historic prison. What does a prison have to do with classical music, you may ask? Well, the beloved Bach has not always been a good boy. Johann Sebastian spent a month in a Weimar prison, for defaulting loans and breach of contract. In Bach in de Bajes (Bach in Prison) this story will be told and the
compositions he wrote immediately after his release from prison will be performed. A concert on bread and water!

Also typical ‘Haags’ is Van Stockum, one of the oldest auction houses of the Netherlands. Van Stockum hosts a very exclusive and intimate concert: Royalty Only (Exclusief voor de Koning). Las Esferas – an ensemble from Madrid committed to rediscovering the music of the Spanish baroque – will perform the music of the legendary Farinelli, who sang exclusively for the Spanish King. Come get a taste of Spanish temperament.
