During Sail for Scheveningen Festival Classique presents a concert of the Band of the Royal Marines with chief conductor major Arjan Tien. The Band of the Royal Marines is one of the three professional concert bands of the Dutch military. The fifty-three musicians provide the music during state ceremonies and military ceremonies. The Band of the Royal Marines has a special sound and charisma and plays different kinds of music.
Long before the Royal Navy had its own concert band, musicians already went along aboard ships. They amused the crew during long ocean voyages. In 1864 'the Staff Music of the Royal Navy' was formed. The Staff Music was discontinued after the outbreak of World War II. On 1 August 1945 the then Minister of the Navy decided to form a band again. The official name of this band was the 'Band of the Royal Marines'.
Arjan Tien is the chief conductor and artistic leader of the Band of the Royal Marines. In 1994 Arjan graduated from the Utrecht Music Academy with the highest distinction for violin and viola. Since 1992 he has worked inter alia with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Magogo Chamber Orchestra. At present Tien is affiliated as principal study teacher of conducting at the Music Academy of Maastricht.
