Festival Classique presents Sound Bites, an evening brimming with classical music. Entirely in keeping with the eclectic signature of Festival Classique Sound Bites explores the boundaries of classical music and sometimes stretches them just a little further. Established names and up-and-coming top talents surprise with unexpected collaborations, reinterpretations and special combinations by using art forms such as dance and film. The result is a many-sided programme of high quality.
An ensemble of The Hague Philharmonic Orchestra (Residentie Orkest) accepts the challenge with electronic musicians: symphonic and electronic music blend in a new arrangement. Cellist Maya Fridman brings a smouldering performance with a female fire dancer, blurring boundaries between music and dance. Opera star Jessey-Joy Spronk takes on the part of Violetta, the famous courtesan from Verdi’s La Traviata, accompanied by David Kweksilber & friends. Slagwerk Den Haag plays a new composition of Aart Strootman, inspired by the actions of the Plastic Soup Surfer Merijn Tinga to raise awareness of plastic waste in seas and oceans. Specially selected film material of the source of inspiration visualizes the music and lifts the composition to a higher level. The talented musicians of De Formule ensemble give a new impulse to the classical chamber music repertoire.
The exuberant mix of styles and genres is not the only thing that makes Festival Classique|Sound Bites special. It is not a concert in a traditional concert hall, but in a hangar of the Fokker Terminal in The Hague. In this magnificent industrial location we are creating the informal atmosphere of a late summer evening on the beach.
Festival Classique|Sound Bites has been composed by artistic leader Marieke Hopman and will open a vista to Festival Classique 2022.
From 19:30 hours we will bid you a cordial welcome with a nice drink. The hall programme will start at 20:00 hours and will last until 22:00 hours. After the end of the 2-hour long programme we will raise our glasses to a successful evening while musicians improvise during the "Sunset Night Jam session".

A ticket for Sound Bites costs € 32.50 per person including a welcome drink prior to the whole programme and a drink afterwards. The price is exclusive of € 0.99 service charges per ticket.

Festival Classic | Sound Bites complies with the guidelines drawn up by the RIVM. We ask all visitors to show a corona acces certificate upon arrival. Guitar player and composer Aart Strootman studied classical guitar and composition at the Fontys & Zuyd Academy of Music and obtained a master's degree in Musicology at Utrecht University. At present Aart is a doctoral candidate at Leiden University, teacher at the Fontys School of Arts in Tilburg, artistic leader of the contemporary music ensemble FC Jongbloed and plays in various bands, ensembles and projects. Aart Strootman won several awards, including the prestigious Gaudeamus composition. In 2019 he received the most important composition award of the Netherlands: the Matthijs Vermeulen award.
Clarinet and saxophone player David Kweksilber is at home with composed as well as improvised music. As a soloist and ensemble player David played in companies such as the Asko|Schönberg and the New Cool Collective Big Band. In 2008 he formed the "David Kweksilber Big Band", in which improvisers play alongside musicians from classical and contemporary ensembles. David Kweksilber is renowned for his great virtuosity.
Elisha Eliana Maaskant
Elisha Eliana Maaskant graduated as a dancer from the dance academy. So the 'dance-part' was already there, she just needed to add fire to it. That happened when a friend encouraged Elisha to hold some fire torches. When she started dancing with them, she was sold. During Sound Bites she joins Maya Fridman as a fire dancer.

Ensemble De Formule
De Formule is a group of ambitious, talented musicians who create unique performances with a boundless love for music, collaboration and wonder. Every performance tells a story that is based on a thoroughly experienced interpretation of the work. By combining different art disciplines they tell a story from a new and surprising angle.
The soprano Jessey-Joy Spronk studied at the Academy of Music of Rotterdam and took part in Dolora Zajick's "Institute for Young Dramatic Voices" in Nevada (US). In 2016 Jessey-Joy made her opera debut as Violetta Valery (La Traviata) in Castelfiorentino with the OMEGA Musica, after she had won the part in their international competition. Apart from numerous engagements in the part of Violetta, she also appeared on stage as Michaela in Bizet's Carmen and as the soprano soloist of the Verdi Requiem.
Kypski is a producer, scratch musician and composer. Kypski's latest long-running electronica project is about the art of using the turntable as an instrument to create new sounds and music in the moment with a modular synthesizer. A fusion of two previously separate worlds: 'Turntablism' and Modular Synthesis, merged together: 'Syntablism'. With this he manages to fulfill a pioneering role worldwide.
Russian-born Maya Fridman is one of the top cellists of the Netherlands. In 2016 she graduated with honours from the Academy of Music of Amsterdam, won the prestigious Dutch Classical Talent Award in 2019, was an artist in residence with Gaudeamus and TivoliVredenburg and performs regularly in large concert halls in Europe. Maya is a versatile cellist, composer and improviser who does not want to be tied down to a specific genre. Although she has a classical music background, she enjoys playing folk, Gothic rock, jazz, flamenco and new music just as much.
The 3rd and the last piece of Maya's program at Sound Bites is a world premiere of the cello version of 'Vespers' by Missy Mazzoli.The original version for violin was premiered a while ago. When Maya heard this composition for the first time, she could not stop thinking how it could sound on cello...
Merijn Tinga is the Plastic Soup Surfer. He originally was a biologist with a later career as artist. What started as a surfing trip on a self-made board of washed-up plastic for more awareness, has grown into a creative and flexible organization. With striking and positive public campaigns the Plastic Soup Surfer calls for tangible measures at the source.
The tenor Pascal Pittie started his singing studies at the so-called VOCO studie at the Jeanne d'Arc College in Maastricht, where he was taught by Ingrid Kappelle. He finished his studies at the Maastricht Conservatory and obtained the diplomas of first phase singing, second phase singing and opera class, all with an extra distinction. He subsequently performed more than 60 opera roles and participated in several international opera festivals. Pascal is also the founder of and singer in the opera formation Vocal Chord, with which he bridges the gap between classical music and pop music.
In the electronic ambient music of Poulson Sq. time seems to have lifted. During Festival Classique Sound Bites they search for the place where sound and space merge in an exciting dialogue with musicians from the Residentie Orkest. Based on classical masterpieces and timeless nature sounds, they make the audience forget about time. Syntablist Kypski provides rhythmic buoys on the open sea. And arranger Gijs Kramer makes a translation to the orchestra.
Het Residentie Orkjets, The Hague Philharmonic Orchestra, is one of the great symphony orchestras of the Netherlands. The orchestra, with The Hague as home base, can often be heard on important stages at home and abroad and reaches more than 120,000 people with concerts and educational and social activities every year.
Slagwerk Den Haag
Since its formation in 1977 Slagwerk Den Haag has been fascinated by sound, pulse and any imaginable material as a source of sound. On that basis they manage to surprise the listener again and again, in every conceivable setting. Slagwerk Den Haag is viewed as one of the most important percussion groups in the world.
